The
year 1979: London Calling, After The Gramme, Entertainment, Cut,
Metal Box, Colossal Youth, The Raincoats, Drums and Wires. it
was a good year for music. School was about to end and 5 lads
in Wiltshire thought it would be a good idea to form a band. The
Bearsuits were born, even before instruments were bought - let
alone learnt.
With
a vague idea on how to make some noise, and a carrier bag full
of awkward teen poetry, they set to work making a racket, and recorded it all on series of demo tapes. Early
tunes included such classics as Pink
Carnations and the seminal Laidler is.
A
gig was offered on the strength of these tapes and the boys headed
off to their debut at Swindon Town Hall. First up in a showcase
of local groups, the boys rocked, and had a ball.
Other
gigs followed at SAKS nightclub and Latton
Graveyard. New material was offered and chaos ensued
whenever they played. The boys even produced a movie.
Later
Mark left and Julie joined rehearsals. But the songs were getting more serious, even
a bit gothic, and there was less noise and chaos. It became
less fun. Eventually the boys and girl went their separate ways.
All that remains today is a stack of dodgy demo tapes, this web site
and memories of a more chaotic and fun time... until the reunion
that is.
